Where Does FreeCommander Store Settings?

FreeCommanderXE settings folder for installed and portable setups, and the dialog that reveals either one.

Last updated

FreeCommanderXE stores configuration as a Settings folder full of ini and xml files. Setup installs put it in local AppData per user, while portable ZIP installs keep it inside the program folder. A fcStart.ini file can redirect it anywhere, which is how USB stick setups stay self contained.

Guessing is unnecessary. The Help and then About dialog prints the exact settings path for your running copy, and clicking it opens the folder directly. That dialog settles installed versus portable questions in one glance.

Where FreeCommander stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\FreeCommanderXE\Settings

Holds FreeCommander.ini plus favorites, layouts, search presets and FTP accounts. Change it under Tools, Settings, Start program, tab Configuration folder. Use Tools and then Backup all settings for a one click snapshot before experimenting.

Frequently asked questions

how do i move freecommander settings to a new pc

Close FreeCommander, then copy the Settings folder to the same location on the new PC. For portable installs that means copying the whole program folder, which carries settings along automatically.

freecommander forgets my settings on restart

Check Settings, then General, and confirm auto save on exit is on. Then verify the Settings folder is writable. Read only folders and portable copies on locked USB sticks are the usual culprits.
