Where Are Railway Empire Save Files Located?

Railway Empire savegames on Windows and Linux, the Steam userdata mirror, and the Epic Temp folder trap.

Last updated

Railway Empire keeps campaigns in a savegames folder under Documents/My Games on Windows, with settings.dat beside it in a settings subfolder. Steam mirrors the tree under userdata for AppID 503940, which is what cloud sync uploads.

The Epic build hides saves in a Temp folder tree, the worst location of any version, so back those up first. Linux uses a Kalypso Media folder directly in home. Copy the Railway Empire folder with the game closed for manual backups.

Where Railway Empire stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\My Games\Railway Empire\savegames

settings.dat sits beside savegames in a settings subfolder. Steam mirrors to userdata\503940\remote\savegames. The Epic build instead uses a Temp tree, so find those saves before they get cleaned.

Linux
~/Kalypso Media/Railway Empire/docs/savegames

A plain folder in home, not under .config or .local/share. Same save format as Windows, so cross platform copies work.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Epic version of Railway Empire save?

Under LocalAppData\Temp in an EpicRailwayEmpire datastorage tree. Temp folders invite cleaners and reinstalls, so move copies to dated backups elsewhere and never treat that tree as safe.

How do I transfer a Railway Empire campaign?

Close the game and copy the campaign files from savegames into the same folder on the target machine. Match DLC on both sides, since a campaign using missing content will not load.
