Where Does Rare Store Config and Game Data?

Rare Legendary frontend config, backend store, data and logs per OS.

Last updated

Rare splits state three ways. Its own conf sits under XDG config with the Legendary backend config beside it in its own folder. Game data, images and compat files branch under local share.

Logs live in cache per platform with per-OS roots. Windows and macOS mirror the same split under their conventions. Keep all three trees together.

Where Rare stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/Rare/Rare.conf

Qt conf plus Legendary backend config, images, compat data and runtime assets. Logs in cache. No ini file exists despite guides. Per-OS roots with the same split.

Windows
%AppData%\Rare\Rare.conf

Same conf, backend and data split under Windows roots with cache logs.

macOS
~/.config/legendary/config.ini

Same split under macOS roots with cache logs beside.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up Rare?

Copy the Rare config and data folders plus the Legendary backend config with both closed. Images, compat data and runtime assets travel in data. Restoring means putting all three back before launch.

Where is rare.ini?

No. Settings use a conf file through Qt conventions, not an ini. Old ini guides describe a filename that does not exist. Trust the conf path from the project code.
