Where Does ReadKit Store Feeds and Offline Articles?

ReadKit universal app library on Mac and iOS, service sync and OPML backup flow.

Last updated

ReadKit is a universal app with one library shape on Mac and iOS: accounts plus a built in RSS engine. Subscriptions, folders, smart folders and cached article bodies live in the app sandbox. The same features ship on both platforms, which is rare for RSS clients.

Most users never touch a local file. With Feedly, Inoreader, Feedbin, FreshRSS, Miniflux, NewsBlur and the read later services (Instapaper, Pocket, Wallabag, Pinboard), the provider is the source of truth and ReadKit mirrors it with background sync. The built in engine (capped around 20 feeds on free) is the only mode where the device holds the subscriptions alone. OPML export is the backup in every mode.

Where ReadKit stores this, by platform

macOS
App sandbox (OPML via File menu in app)

Universal purchase with iOS. Offline reading and image caching (Premium), reader mode extraction, YouTube subscriptions via RSS, badge counts. Export subscriptions regularly from the OPML screen.

iOS
App sandbox (OPML via share sheet)

Same accounts and smart folders as Mac. Background sync keeps the mirror fresh. Share extension saves from Safari into read later services. AI summaries need Premium plus Apple Intelligence on iOS 26.

Frequently asked questions

how do I back up ReadKit feeds

Export OPML from the app and save the file to iCloud Drive or Files. Import it on the new device the same way. Service based accounts hardly need this: signing into Feedly or Inoreader again restores everything.

does ReadKit work fully offline

Yes for cached content. Articles and images fetched before losing signal stay readable, and reader mode extraction runs on the cached copy. New headlines wait for the next background sync, so open the app on Wi-Fi before a flight.
