Where Does Roon Store Its Database?

Roon keeps its library database in Local AppData on Windows, with Core and remote roles splitting where data lives.

Last updated

Roon database location depends on role. The Core holds the library: analyzed audio, artwork, playlists, and edits. Remotes and Bridges hold only caches. Music files themselves always stay in your watched folders, never inside the database.

On Windows the Core database sits under Local AppData in Roon or RoonServer trees by install type. Back up from Settings then Backups to a scheduled folder rather than copying live database files. Restores reattach watched folders automatically when paths match.

Where Roon stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Roon\Database

Server installs use a RoonServer sibling tree. Exact folder varies by Core versus remote install, check Local Roon trees if this does not match. Use scheduled backups, not live file copies.

macOS
~/Library/Roon/Database

Exact path may vary by install type, check Library Roon trees if this does not match. Keep watched music folders stable so restores relink without rescanning everything.

Frequently asked questions

How should I back up Roon?

Schedule backups inside Roon Settings to a separate drive or NAS. Those snapshots restore cleanly. Copying the live Database folder by hand risks corruption from open files.

Where is my music if Roon database is separate?

In your own watched folders wherever you ripped or downloaded it. The database only references those paths plus metadata, so back up music files independently.
