Where Does Safari Store History and Bookmarks?
Safari History.db and Bookmarks.plist location on Mac, and why iPhone Safari has no file path.
Last updated
On Mac, Safari keeps history in a History.db SQLite database and bookmarks in Bookmarks.plist, both directly under ~/Library/Safari. Tabs and reading list live nearby.
Copy these only with Safari quit. The database locks while running, and half copied SQLite files read as corrupt.
Where Safari stores this, by platform
~/Library/Safari/History.db
Bookmarks live next to it as Bookmarks.plist. In Finder use Go > Go to Folder. iPhone Safari has no browsable path; it syncs through iCloud instead.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move Safari bookmarks to a new Mac?
Easiest is iCloud Safari sync on both Macs. By hand, copy Bookmarks.plist with Safari quit, or export via File, Export Bookmarks for a portable HTML file.
Can I read deleted Safari history from History.db?
Sometimes. Deleted rows linger until vacuumed, and Time Machine copies of the file hold older states. Query a copy, never the live file.
