Where Does Safari Store Profile Data?

Safari profiles keep separate history, cookies, and extensions per profile under the Safari container, keyed by profile UUID since Safari 17.

Last updated

Safari profiles arrived with Safari 17 and split the browser into parallel lives. Work keeps its tabs, history, cookies, and extensions apart from Personal. Under the hood each named profile gets a UUID, and its data sits in profile folders inside the sandboxed Safari container.

The default profile is the odd one out: it keeps the old pre-profile paths for compatibility. Named profiles store history databases under Safari Profiles folders and website data under matching WebKit store folders. Reading them needs Full Disk Access, so manage profiles in Safari settings and export with File > Export rather than digging.

Where Safari Profiles stores this, by platform

macOS
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Safari/Data/Library/Safari/Profiles/

Per-profile history and data keyed by UUID. The default profile uses legacy ~/Library/Safari paths. Needs Full Disk Access to browse; prefer Safari settings and File > Export.

iOS
Settings > Apps > Safari (synced profiles)

Profiles sync through iCloud with Safari syncing on. Export browsing data per profile from Safari settings in the Settings app. There is no user-facing folder on iOS.

Frequently asked questions

Do Safari profiles share history?

No. Each profile keeps its own history database, cookies, website data, and extensions. The default profile stays in the legacy Safari folders while named profiles live under Profiles folders keyed by UUID. Export with File > Export to move browsing data as a ZIP per profile.

How do I tell which folder is which profile?

Open Safari settings and look at the Profiles tab, or read the active profile UUID from Safari preferences. Match the UUID to the folder names under the Profiles directory. The default profile uses the legacy paths instead of a UUID folder.
