Where Is the Sanoid Config File?
Sanoid reads snapshot policy from /etc/sanoid/sanoid.conf, with untouchable defaults beside it.
Last updated
Sanoid centers on one human readable file: /etc/sanoid/sanoid.conf. Datasets go in square brackets with templates below the line, and a cron job or systemd timer runs sanoid --cron against it.
The defaults file next to it is required but not yours to edit. It doubles as the list of every settable option, so read it, then override in your own file.
Where Sanoid stores this, by platform
/etc/sanoid/sanoid.conf
Dataset policies and templates. Snapshot cache lives in /var/cache/sanoid, lock files in /var/run/sanoid. Validate edits by running sanoid --cron by hand once.
Frequently asked questions
Should I edit sanoid.defaults.conf to change retention?
Leave sanoid.defaults.conf alone and override in sanoid.conf with your own template_default section. Upgrades replace the defaults file and your edits vanish with it.
Can I keep sanoid.conf somewhere other than /etc/sanoid?
Pass --configdir <dir> (or run the sample from /usr/share/doc on Ubuntu). The file inside must still be named sanoid.conf; only the directory changes.
