Where Does TrueNAS Store Config and Pools?
TrueNAS system database and storage pool mount paths on SCALE servers, plus where configs back up to.
Last updated
TrueNAS SCALE keeps system settings in a database at /data/freenas-v1.db. That file holds users, shares, and network config. The web UI exports it with a secret seed for full restores.
Storage pools mount under /mnt with datasets beneath each pool. Apps, shares, and VMs all point into that tree. Back up the config database with pool data. The config alone restores settings without files. Pools carry the actual stored data. Snapshots schedule per dataset in the UI. Apps reference datasets by host path mapping.
Where TrueNAS stores this, by platform
/data/freenas-v1.db (TrueNAS SCALE)
System settings database with users, shares, and network config. Export through the UI with the secret seed. Copy for versioned off box backups.
/mnt (TrueNAS pools)
Pool and dataset roots for all stored data. Apps reference subpaths here. Check the Storage page when mounts differ after import.
Frequently asked questions
how do i back up a TrueNAS configuration
Download the config in System, General with the secret seed. The database at /data/freenas-v1.db holds settings. Pools under /mnt carry the data. Both restore the system.
where are TrueNAS pools mounted
Look under /mnt with one folder per pool and dataset. Apps and shares reference these paths. The system dataset also sits in a pool. Check Storage in the UI for mapping.
