Where Does ShareX Save Screenshots?

ShareX's default Documents folder, Screenshots tree, and the Paths settings that move it.

Last updated

ShareX creates its own directory in Documents on first run and drops captures into a Screenshots subfolder. Uploads to Imgur or S3 never replace that local copy, which is exactly the backup people forget they have.

Everything about the layout is configurable under Application Settings then Paths. Custom folders plus year/month subfolder patterns keep large screenshot libraries browsable without manual sorting.

Where ShareX stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\ShareX\Screenshots

Default tree with settings beside it. Change under Application Settings > Paths with a custom folder and %y-%mo style subfolder pattern.

Frequently asked questions

ShareX uploads but where is the local file?

In the Screenshots folder above, saved before upload. If empty, check Application Settings > Paths for a custom folder override.

How do I organize captures by date automatically?

Set the subfolder pattern to year-month form in Paths settings. New captures then file themselves into monthly folders on their own.
