Where Does ShareX Save Screenshots?

Where ShareX saves screenshots by default, how the yearly subfolders work, and where to set a custom path.

Last updated

ShareX saves captures into a Screenshots folder inside its personal folder at Documents\ShareX. Captures sort into year-month subfolders automatically (the %y-%mo pattern), so a busy setup grows a tidy dated tree without any configuration.

History is the part people lose. The app tracks every capture in History.json inside the same personal folder, with absolute paths to each file. Move screenshots without updating history and the in app previews break, while the files themselves are fine.

Where ShareX stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\ShareX\Screenshots

The Screenshots subfolder holds dated %y-%mo folders. Change the destination in Application Settings > Paths. Portable installs keep everything next to ShareX.exe instead of Documents.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the ShareX screenshots folder?

Open Application Settings > Paths and tick Use custom screenshots folder, then Browse to the new location. New captures go there from then on. Old screenshots stay put, so move them by hand if you want one folder.

Can I stop ShareX from creating a folder in Documents?

Pass -portable on the command line or place an empty file named Portable next to ShareX.exe. Portable mode keeps settings, history and screenshots beside the executable, so the Documents folder stays untouched.
