Where Does SimplyE Store Borrowed Books?

SimplyE NYPL loans, offline ebooks and audiobooks in app storage.

Last updated

SimplyE (the New York Public Library open source reader behind Palace) keeps everything borrowed inside the app: the unified catalog of local and partner collections, your holds and checkouts, and the downloaded files for offline reading. Loans expire and clean up after themselves.

The device authorization is the gotcha carried over to Palace. Adobe DRM titles bind to the device on first download, so resets and abandoned phones consume activations. The shelf itself is safe in the account. Only the offline copies are disposable, and only until the due date.

Where SimplyE stores this, by platform

Android
App-private storage (loans downloaded in-app)

Add libraries, sign in with a card or SimplyE login, borrow, then download per title. Account holds survive reinstalls; downloaded audio and text do not. Deauthorize before wiping.

iOS
App sandbox (loans downloaded in-app)

Same model on iOS with in-app playback and reading. Expired titles vanish on their own. Offloading the app may preserve the shell while dropping every downloaded book.

Frequently asked questions

can I read SimplyE books in another app

No. Downloads are DRM sealed in the SimplyE sandbox for the loan period. Finish them in SimplyE or borrow a DRM free edition elsewhere. Exporting the file is not offered.

my SimplyE loans are gone after reinstall, where are they

The loan records remain on the account once you sign back in; only the downloaded files were lost. Borrow or re-download current titles. Overdue items during the gap simply expired.
