Where Does SiYuan Store Workspace Data?

Where SiYuan keeps workspace data, notebooks, and configs across desktop installs.

Last updated

SiYuan stores everything inside a workspace folder you choose: notebooks, data storage, and local configs together. There is no registry split. Open a folder as a workspace and the app adopts it.

That makes migration a folder copy. The catch is version drift and sync state: workspace files plus the conf dir travel as a unit. Exact internal names shift between releases, so trust the workspace root rather than memorizing subpaths.

Where SiYuan stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Your-Name]\Documents\SiYuan\

Workspace root with data/, notebooks, and conf/ inside. Default location varies by install; check File, Open workspace for the live path. Exact internal names may vary by version.

macOS
~/Documents/SiYuan/

Same workspace-root layout. Check the in-app workspace path before copying; the default differs between installer and store builds.

Linux
~/Documents/SiYuan/

Same layout. AppImage and package installs share the workspace convention; only the binary location changes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move a SiYuan workspace?

Copy the whole workspace folder (data/, notebooks, conf) to the new machine and open it with File, Open workspace. Keep app versions close; very old workspaces can confuse a new parser. Cloud sync is separate and optional.

Configs versus notes: what to back up?

Configs live beside the workspace (conf, appearance, kernels) while notes live in data/storage Yale-style folders per notebook. Back up the workspace root rather than cherry-picking files; internal links assume the tree stays intact.
