Where Does Slackware Track Packages and Mirrors?

Slackware logs every installed package in /var/log/packages with install scripts in /var/log/scripts, and slackpkg mirrors live in /etc/slackpkg/mirrors.

Last updated

Slackware predates dependency resolving package managers, and its storage shows it. Installed packages are plain logs in /var/log/packages with matching install scripts in /var/log/scripts. No database, no cache of metadata, just files.

The slackpkg tool adds mirror based updates on top. Its mirror list is a single file with one uncommented line doing the work. Downloaded packages stage for install rather than lingering in a big cache, so Slackware rarely grows mystery disk usage the way cached distros do.

Where Slackware stores this, by platform

Linux
/var/log/packages

One log per installed package with its file list. Grep here to find which package owns a file. removepkg keeps these accurate.

Linux
/etc/slackpkg/mirrors

Mirror list with exactly one active line for your version. Uncomment a nearby mirror, then slackpkg update. Wrong version lines here break updates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I see installed packages on Slackware?

Look in /var/log/packages, one file per installed package listing its contents. There is no dependency database beyond this. Use removepkg to uninstall cleanly so the logs stay accurate.

How do I set up slackpkg mirrors?

Open /etc/slackpkg/mirrors and uncomment one mirror for your release version. Then run slackpkg update to fetch the package lists. Pick a mirror geographically near you since the file lists every region.
