Where Is the Net-SNMP Config File?

Net-SNMP reads snmpd.conf in /etc/snmp with persistent agent data in /var/lib/snmp beside it.

Last updated

Net-SNMP configures the agent from snmpd.conf in /etc/snmp. Community strings, views, and trap destinations live there in plain directives. Persistent counters and engine IDs accumulate under /var/lib/snmp.

SNMPv3 users provision through the config with created credentials on restart. Client side defaults sit in snmp.conf beside the daemon file. Restart the agent after community changes.

Where Net-SNMP stores this, by platform

Linux
/etc/snmp/snmpd.conf

Communities, views, and traps live here. Persistent engine data sits in /var/lib/snmp. Client defaults go in snmp.conf beside it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add an SNMP community?

Add a rocommunity line with source restrictions in snmpd.conf, then restart. Prefer SNMPv3 users for anything exposed. Test with a walk from the monitor.

Where is SNMP persistent data?

Under /var/lib/snmp with engine boots and counters. Deleting it resets notification numbering. Keep it across restarts for stable engine IDs.
