Where Does Stellarium Store Config and Landscapes?

Stellarium keeps config.ini in ~/.config/stellarium on Linux and AppData on Windows.

Last updated

Stellarium stores main settings in config.ini under its per OS user folder, with landscapes, scripts, and star catalogs in subfolders beside it. New builds use ~/.config/stellarium on Linux while very old ones used ~/.stellarium.

Back up the whole folder to keep location, plugins, and custom landscapes together. Catalog files are large and redownloadable, so skip them when space matters. Oculars and telescope settings travel in the same ini.

Where Stellarium stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[You]\AppData\Roaming\Stellarium

config.ini plus landscapes, scripts, and nebulae textures. Copy with Stellarium closed. Catalogs can be skipped and refetched.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Stellarium

Same layout. Library is hidden in Finder. Plugin state restores with the folder copy.

Linux
~/.config/stellarium

config.ini and data subfolders. Legacy installs may still use ~/.stellarium. Copy the active tree only.

Frequently asked questions

Where are Stellarium landscapes stored?

In the landscapes subfolder of the per OS user dir above. Copy custom ones with config.ini. Downloads from the built in source refetch on demand.

How do I migrate Stellarium location settings?

Copy config.ini to the matching path. Location, time, and plugin toggles restore with it. Verify one known object renders correctly.
