Where Does Storytel Store Offline Books?

Storytel downloads stay encrypted inside the app under the Downloaded tab. No folder holds playable files.

Last updated

Storytel saves offline books inside its own private storage in encrypted formats, not as MP3s in a folder. You reach them through the Downloaded tab in your bookshelf. Peeking into the app's Android data folder shows nothing useful, which is DRM doing its job.

Offline comes with strings attached. The app must phone home at least every 30 days or downloads evaporate, logging out wipes them immediately, and 100 titles is the cap. Keep 2GB free during downloads and leave the app alone until they finish.

Where Storytel stores this, by platform

Android
In-app: bookshelf > Downloaded tab (app-private storage)

Audiobooks and ebooks in .stb/.exo DRM formats, playable only in Storytel. Downloads need an active subscription and a check-in every 30 days. Logging out deletes everything, so re-download instead of hunting folders.

iOS
In-app: bookshelf > Downloaded tab (app-private storage)

Same encrypted storage as Android. Ebooks download automatically on first open with no separate button. Offloading or deleting the app removes downloads while the bookshelf list itself survives in your account.

Frequently asked questions

Can I copy Storytel downloads as MP3 files?

No. Downloads are DRM encrypted and bound to the app and your login. They play only inside Storytel on the downloading device. Anything claiming to extract them is a third party workaround outside the app's terms.

My Storytel downloads disappeared. What happened?

The usual causes are 30 days without internet, a logout, or an app reinstall, all of which invalidate offline files by design. Reconnect, stay logged in, and download again. Keep the app under 100 offline titles.
