Where Are Stray Save Files Located?

Stray Hk_project SaveGames folder on Windows and Linux, which slot files matter, and where the config hides beside saves.

Last updated

Stray hides saves under an internal project name, Hk_project, inside AppData/Local. The full tree is Hk_project/Saved/SaveGames with numbered slots beneath. Nobody guesses that folder name without being told, which makes this the site's favorite kind of gotcha.

Config sits beside saves in Saved/Config/WindowsNoEditor with GameUserSettings inside. Copy the whole Hk_project folder with the game closed to move progress plus graphics options. Linux Proton mirrors the same tree under its prefix for the same AppID.

Where Stray stores this, by platform

Windows
%localappdata%\Hk_project\Saved\SaveGames

Note the exact spelling Hk_project with one t in project. Config is at %localappdata%\Hk_project\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor. Copy the full tree.

Linux
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1332010/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Hk_project/Saved/SaveGames

Proton path for AppID 1332010. The Steam root varies, so search compatdata/1332010 for Hk_project if your library moved drives.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I find a Stray folder in AppData?

The game uses its internal codename Hk_project instead of Stray. Paste %localappdata%\Hk_project\Saved\SaveGames into Explorer and the slots appear.

How do I back up Stray progress?

Close the game, copy the Hk_project folder elsewhere with a date in the name. Restoring means replacing that tree with Cloud paused, then launching once.
