Where Does Streamlink Store Config and Plugin Settings?

Where Streamlink reads its main config file and per plugin configs on Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Last updated

Streamlink reads a file literally named config from the OS config directory: ~/.config/streamlink on Linux, ~/Library/Application Support/streamlink on macOS, %APPDATA%\streamlink on Windows. Per site overrides sit beside it as config.twitch and friends.

Old installs may still carry a streamlinkrc from deprecated paths, which the current build ignores with a log note. When settings seem to have no effect, check for that leftover first. Recordings always go to your -o path, never into the config folder.

Where Streamlink stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/streamlink/config

config plus config.<plugin> files here. Honors $XDG_CONFIG_HOME when set. Deprecated ~/.streamlinkrc still shadows nothing but logs a warning; delete it to stop the confusion.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/streamlink/config

Same filenames under Application Support. Finder hides Library, so use Go > Go to Folder. Homebrew and pip installs read the identical location.

Windows
%APPDATA%\streamlink\config

The installer creates this file automatically, the only platform that does. Paste %APPDATA%\streamlink into Explorer. Old %APPDATA%\streamlink\streamlinkrc copies need manual merging into the new name.

Frequently asked questions

where is the streamlink config file

Create a file named config in the platform folder (~/.config/streamlink/config on Linux). The Windows installer creates one automatically; other platforms need it by hand. The --config flag points at an alternate file, and --no-config ignores files entirely.

where do streamlink plugin settings go

As config.<pluginname> beside the main file (for example config.twitch). Plugin files override the main config for that site only. Only the first existing file in the search order loads, so a stray old streamlinkrc can shadow the new one.

where does streamlink save recordings

Yes for recordings: the -o path is yours to choose, with {title} and {time} variables for names. The config folder holds settings, never video. A missing recording means the output path was wrong, not the config.
