Where Are Subnautica Save Files Located?
Subnautica SavedGames folder on Windows, macOS and Linux, and how slot folders map to your in game survival saves.
Last updated
Subnautica stores each campaign as a slot folder full of screenshots, scene files and JSON state. The parent folder is called SavedGames under an Unknown Worlds tree. Slot names like slot0002 tell you little in Explorer, so match by date.
Open the game to see which slot is which, then match by date modified. Copy the whole SavedGames folder for backups. Single files inside a slot depend on each other. Renaming folders by hand breaks the save, so rename inside the game menu instead.
Where Subnautica stores this, by platform
C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\LocalLow\Unknown Worlds\Subnautica\Subnautica\SavedGames
AppData is hidden. Each slotXXXX subfolder is one campaign. Copy the full SavedGames folder with the game closed.
~/Library/Application Support/unity.Unknown Worlds Entertainment.Subnautica/Subnautica/SavedGames
Note the long unity. prefix. Use Go > Go to Folder in Finder. Epic and Steam Mac builds share this layout when native.
~/.config/unity3d/Unknown Worlds/Subnautica/Subnautica/SavedGames
Native builds use this path. Proton installs use compatdata/264710 in your Steam library instead, so search for SavedGames there if this is empty.
Frequently asked questions
Can I rename a Subnautica save?
Rename it inside the game, not in Explorer. Manual folder renames break internal references. Use the in game Save menu to give slot folders readable names safely.
How do I move Subnautica saves to another PC?
Copy the entire SavedGames folder to the same location on the new machine with the game closed. Launch once and confirm each slot loads before turning Steam Cloud back on.
