Where Does Tealdeer Store Its Cache?

Tealdeer page cache and config paths on Linux, Mac and Windows, plus the one command that prints them all.

Last updated

Tealdeer caches tldr pages on disk so lookups work offline, and the cache directory follows operating system conventions. Linux uses the XDG cache home, macOS uses the Caches folder, and Windows uses local AppData. The config file and custom pages each get their own neighboring directories.

Memorizing the table is optional. The command tldr --show-paths prints every effective path for your install, including overrides from the config file or environment. That single command is the practical answer on any machine you did not set up yourself.

Where Tealdeer stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.cache/tealdeer

Pages live in a tldr-pages subfolder inside. Override with cache_dir under [directories] in config.toml, or the older TEALDEER_CACHE_DIR variable. Config itself sits at ~/.config/tealdeer/config.toml.

macOS
~/Library/Caches/tealdeer

Follows the OS convention like other Mac apps. Show the real path with tldr --show-paths if a custom cache_dir is set, since the config file overrides this default silently.

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\tealdeer

Config goes to %APPDATA%\tealdeer\config.toml by the same convention. Custom pages default to a pages folder under your local share directory, listed by --show-paths.

Frequently asked questions

how do i see the exact paths tealdeer uses

Run tldr --show-paths. It prints the config path, cache directory, pages directory and custom pages directory your build actually uses, which settles every platform disagreement at once.

how do i clear the tealdeer cache

Run tldr --clear-cache. Tealdeer re-downloads fresh pages on next lookup. The cache is disposable by design, so wiping it never loses settings or custom pages.
