Where Does Textual Store Styles and Transcripts?

Where Textual keeps styles, extensions and transcripts on Mac, and why the path has Group Containers.

Last updated

Textual keeps support files in a Group Containers tree on Mac with different names per install flavor. Styles, extensions and transcripts each own a folder under the Textual root there. Preferences live in the standard defaults system beside them.

App Store and standalone builds never share one container, so guides quoting one path fail on the other flavor. Bundled styles ship inside the app itself apart from user copies. Copy the container folder whole for migration. Server certificates share the container folder, so copy it whole for moves.

Where Textual stores this, by platform

macOS
~/Library/Group Containers/com.codeux.apps.textual/Library/Application Support/Textual

Container tree with styles, extensions and transcripts under the Textual root. App Store and standalone flavors differ. Prefs live in system defaults.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up Textual styles and logs?

Open the Group Containers tree for your install flavor from this post and copy the Textual folder whole. Styles, extensions and transcripts travel together under it. App Store and standalone builds use different container names that never mix.

Why is Textual data not in plain Application Support?

App Store sandboxing forces support files into the Group Containers tree instead of plain Application Support. Standalone builds use a different container name in the same parent. Check both names before declaring files missing.
