Where Does The Isle Store Settings and Save Data?
The Isle keeps almost nothing on your PC. Dino progress lives on the server you play on; the local folder holds settings and logs.
Last updated
Search for a The Isle save file and you will find threads full of people who could not find one either. That is correct behavior. Character growth, traits, and nesting are stored server-side: tied to your Steam account on official servers, and to each community server's own database elsewhere. The PC holds preferences, logs, and caches, not dinosaurs.
What it does keep lives in %LOCALAPPDATA%\TheIsle, under the usual Unreal layout. The folder rebuilds itself if removed, which is the standard fix for settings that will not cooperate. Steam Cloud is not involved, so nothing here follows you to a new machine, and nothing you delete can cost you progress.
Where The Isle stores this, by platform
%LOCALAPPDATA%\TheIsle
Settings and logs, in the standard Unreal Saved tree. There is no local save file to back up because progression never touches the disk; removing this folder resets your options and nothing else.
Frequently asked questions
Where is my The Isle dino stored?
On the server. Growth, traits, and nesting are part of the server's own data, matched to your account on official servers. Nothing on your PC can restore progress after a wipe, because nothing on your PC ever held it.
Can I move a The Isle character to another server?
No. Each server keeps its own population, which is why community servers advertise fresh wipes and their own rule sets. Transfers are not a thing in The Isle, and the local folder would not help even if they were.
What is safe to delete in the The Isle folder?
%LOCALAPPDATA%\TheIsle rebuilds its files after deletion, at the cost of your options and keybinds. Progress is unaffected because it was never there. Rename the folder rather than delete it if you want the old settings back.
