Where Does Tmux TPM Store Plugins?
Tmux TPM plugin directory, manager install path and the tmux.conf lines it needs.
Last updated
TPM here means the tmux plugin manager, not the hardware chip. It clones each listed plugin into its own folder under the plugins directory. The manager itself lives in a tpm subfolder of the same root.
Two config pieces matter. Plugin lines register names, and a final run line boots the manager. XDG layouts move the root, and two env vars override it entirely.
Where TPM stores this, by platform
~/.tmux/plugins
Each plugin gets its own subfolder here. TPM itself lives in the tpm child folder. XDG configs move the root under the tmux config dir. Overridable via plugin manager path vars. Install with prefix+I, clean with prefix+alt+u.
~/.tmux/plugins
Same layout as Linux with POSIX paths. README covers Linux, macOS and Cygwin. No native Windows path exists.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up TPM plugins?
Close all tmux sessions and copy the plugins folder plus tmux.conf elsewhere. Restoring means putting both back and pressing the install key to re-clone anything missing. Keep the run line at the very bottom of the config.
Why must the run line stay last?
The run line for tpm must stay last, since tmux reads the file top to bottom. Plugin option lines above it register first. Anything placed after the run line never loads.
