Where Does Tor Browser Store Data?

Tor Browser profile, bookmarks and torrc paths on Windows, macOS and Linux, and why each install keeps its own copy.

Last updated

Tor Browser keeps its profile inside its own install tree rather than a shared system folder. Bookmarks live in places.sqlite under a profile.default folder, and Tor settings live in torrc nearby. Each copy of Tor Browser uses its own data.

That surprises Firefox users hunting in the usual Mozilla paths. On Mac the data moved out of the app bundle into TorBrowser-Data under Application Support since version 6. Close Tor Browser before editing torrc or copying places.sqlite, or changes get overwritten on quit.

Where Tor Browser stores this, by platform

Windows
[TorBrowser]\Browser\TorBrowser\Data\Browser\profile.default

Portable by design. The install folder you chose holds everything. torrc sits at Browser\TorBrowser\Data\Tor\torrc one level over. Back up the whole Data folder to move all identities.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/TorBrowser-Data/Browser/profile.default

Bookmarks are in places.sqlite inside. torrc is at ~/Library/Application Support/TorBrowser-Data/Tor/torrc. Use Go > Go to Folder to reach the hidden Library.

Linux
[tor-browser]/Browser/TorBrowser/Data/Browser/profile.default

Same portable layout as Windows under wherever you extracted the tarball. Distro packages may instead use ~/.local/share/torbrowser, so check there if this misses.

Frequently asked questions

Where are Tor Browser bookmarks?

In places.sqlite inside the profile.default folder. With Tor Browser closed, copy that file to a backup. Query it with a SQLite browser if you need to read titles and URLs without launching.

Where is the torrc file?

Next to the profile data: Browser/TorBrowser/Data/Tor/torrc on Windows and Linux, ~/Library/Application Support/TorBrowser-Data/Tor/torrc on Mac. Edit only while Tor Browser is fully closed.
