Where Does TuxGuitar Store Config and Songs?

TuxGuitar keeps settings, tunings and recent files in a per-OS config folder. Exact paths for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Last updated

TuxGuitar splits its data in two. Your songs are plain .tg files wherever you saved them, exchangeable with Guitar Pro formats through File > Export. Settings, custom tunings and the recent-files list live in a config folder whose location depends on the OS.

Most options change from inside the app under Tools > Settings. A few unusual ones need a text editor on tuxguitar.cfg in the config folder. Respect XDG environment variables on Linux: if you set XDG_CONFIG_HOME, that is where the config goes instead of ~/.config.

Where TuxGuitar stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\tuxguitar

Main file is config\tuxguitar.cfg, with tunings.xml and history.properties beside it. Cached shared data sits under a cache subfolder in the same tree.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/tuxguitar

Same config files as Windows. Shared cache goes to ~/Library/Caches/tuxguitar instead. Use Go > Go to Folder in Finder to reach either.

Linux
~/.config/tuxguitar

Default unless XDG_CONFIG_HOME is set, in which case TuxGuitar follows it. Debug output lands in log/tuxguitar.log when the debug plugin is enabled.

Frequently asked questions

Where are my TuxGuitar songs saved?

Wherever you saved them. TuxGuitar songs are ordinary .tg files with no fixed library folder. Check File > Open recent or the config/history.properties file for the paths of tabs you opened before.

How do I back up TuxGuitar settings and custom tunings?

Copy the whole config folder for your OS while TuxGuitar is closed. That carries tuxguitar.cfg, tunings.xml, templates and plugin settings in one move. Songs themselves need a separate backup since they live elsewhere.
