Where Does Ubooquity Store Its Database and Settings?

Ubooquity keeps database, preferences and covers in its own working folder. Layout, the --workdir override and what to back up.

Last updated

Ubooquity is fully self-contained. Everything it owns sits in one working folder: preferences.json for settings and users, ubooquity-N.mv.db for the scanned database, webadmin.cred for the admin password, plus cache, logs and themes. Move that folder and the server moves with it.

By default the working folder is wherever you launched Ubooquity.jar from. Pin it with --workdir when running as a service so upgrades never scatter files. Back up preferences.json, the database, webadmin.cred and cache together to restore without rescanning. Comics themselves stay outside in your shared folders.

Where Ubooquity stores this, by platform

Windows
<Ubooquity folder>\preferences.json

The bracketed folder is wherever Ubooquity.jar runs, or your --workdir target. Database (ubooquity-N.mv.db), cache and logs sit beside it. Stop the server before copying.

macOS
<Ubooquity folder>/preferences.json

Same self-contained layout as Windows. Delete webadmin.cred while stopped to reset a lost admin password. Automatic db zips appear if databaseBackupFolder is set.

Linux
<Ubooquity folder>/preferences.json

Mirrors the other platforms exactly since Ubooquity is plain Java. Point a systemd unit's WorkingDirectory here so --workdir stays constant across reboots.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up Ubooquity without rescanning?

With the server stopped, copy preferences.json, the ubooquity-N.mv.db database, webadmin.cred, cache and themes. Restore the set into the working folder and start. Your comics folders need a separate backup since they live outside.

I forgot the Ubooquity admin password, now what?

Stop Ubooquity and delete webadmin.cred in the working folder. Restarting recreates the default login. Set a fresh password on the admin page right away.
