Where Does Valkey Store Snapshots and Config?

Valkey config file, RDB snapshot, and append-only folders for Redis fork package installs on Linux servers.

Last updated

Valkey follows the Redis layout it forked from. Config lives at /etc/valkey/valkey.conf on Debian and Ubuntu packages. That file sets the working dir, usually /var/lib/valkey, with snapshots as dump.rdb inside it.

Append-only logs live in the same folder when appendonly is enabled. Source installs default to ./dump.rdb in the working directory instead, so check the dir line first. Back up RDB files with the config. Check the dir line first on source builds. The config holds passwords and persistence switches needed for restore.

Where Valkey stores this, by platform

Linux
/var/lib/valkey/dump.rdb

Package default from valkey.conf dir line. Holds dump.rdb plus appendonly files when enabled. Owned by the valkey user, so copy with sudo for backups.

Linux
/etc/valkey/valkey.conf

Holds dir, dbfilename, appendonly, and requirepass settings. Restrict read access since it can contain passwords. Keep with RDB backups for full restore.

Frequently asked questions

where is the Valkey dump.rdb file

Open /etc/valkey/valkey.conf and read the dir and dbfilename lines. The dump file sits in that dir, usually /var/lib/valkey/dump.rdb. Append-only files share the same folder when enabled.

can i move the Valkey data directory

Yes. Set dir to the new path in valkey.conf, move existing dumps and append files, then fix ownership to the valkey user and restart. Clients see no difference when the move is clean.
