Where Does Mise Store Tools and Config?
Mise's data, config, cache and state dirs plus the env vars that relocate each one.
Last updated
Mise splits four concerns across four roots. Tools and plugins live in the data dir, shareable config.toml in the config dir, disposable version lists in cache, and trust records in state.
Only config.toml belongs in dotfiles. Data can even symlink against asdf's ~/.asdf since the layouts match, which eases migration between the two managers.
Where Mise stores this, by platform
%LOCALAPPDATA%\mise\shims
Shims dir to add to PATH when shell activation is unavailable. Data, config, cache and state follow the same four way split under LocalAppData and AppData.
~/.local/share/mise
Data root with installs, plugins, downloads and shims below it. Config at ~/.config/mise/config.toml, cache at ~/Library/Caches/mise, state at ~/.local/state/mise.
~/.local/share/mise
Same four roots. Overrides: MISE_DATA_DIR, MISE_CONFIG_DIR, MISE_CACHE_DIR, MISE_STATE_DIR. Tools land in installs/<tool>/<version> with lts and latest symlinks.
Frequently asked questions
How do I fully uninstall mise?
Run mise implode, or manually remove ~/.local/share/mise, ~/.local/state/mise and ~/.config/mise. That clears tools, trust state and config together.
Can mise and asdf share tools?
Mostly yes by symlinking ~/.local/share/mise against ~/.asdf. Layouts are near identical, though shims and state stay separate per manager.
