Where Does Vifm Store Config?
Vifm reads vifmrc from XDG config with $VIFM override. Colors, trash, and session files.
Last updated
Vifm reads vifmrc from ~/.config/vifm, with $VIFM redirecting the whole home when set. Colorschemes, trash state, sessions, and vifminfo event logs share the folder. Startup applies the file top to bottom, so order matters for mappings.
No config ships by default; the man page documents every option to grow your own. Test a broken setup with --no-configs, which skips all files and proves whether the config or the environment broke. Trash behavior (move vs delete) is itself a vifmrc setting.
Where Vifm stores this, by platform
~/.config/vifm/vifmrc
Main config with colors/, trash/, and sessions beside it. $VIFM relocates the tree. --no-configs bypasses everything for debugging.
Frequently asked questions
where is the vifm config file
At ~/.config/vifm/vifmrc once created; Vifm ships none. The man page Startup section explains $VIFM resolution order when the default looks wrong.
vifm deleted files bypass trash, why
The trash option in vifmrc decides move vs permanent delete, and DD always skips trash by design. Check the setting before blaming the filesystem.
