Where Does Viseron Store Config and Recordings?

Viseron Docker config file and recordings folders for a self-hosted camera install.

Last updated

Viseron runs in Docker, so every path is a volume you chose in compose. Config is a single YAML file mounted at /config/config.yaml. If it is missing on first start, Viseron writes a default one with public demo cameras to get you going.

Recordings are the second volume. Event clips, continuous segments and the timeline all derive from the storage tiers in that same YAML. Retention defaults keep event recordings about 7 days and record continuously unless you narrow it. Secrets (camera passwords) belong in the secrets file referenced with !secret, not inline.

Where Viseron stores this, by platform

Linux
./config/config.yaml

Host side of the ./config:/config volume (with ./recordings:/recordings beside it). Edit in the built-in Configuration Editor or by hand, mount /etc/localtime read only for correct timestamps, and keep a copy before upgrading.

Frequently asked questions

where are Viseron recordings stored

In the host folder mounted at /recordings, organized under /segments per your storage tiers. Set events max_age and continuous max_size per camera in config.yaml. The Timeline tab in the web UI reads from exactly that volume.

why does Viseron complain about a missing folder on start

A storage tier points at a container path that has no host mount, such as /event_clips. Create the host folder and add the matching volume line in compose, then restart. The container never creates missing mounts for you.
