Wartales breaks convention by saving into a save folder inside its own install directory. Steam Cloud syncs that tree, which SteamDB confirms with a gameinstall root rather than an AppData one.
That choice has sharp edges. Verifying files or moving the install can orphan saves, and Game Pass builds use a wgs container instead. For Steam, back up the install save folder plus the Roaming copy below.

Default library is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam. Files are .sav and .dat. A Roaming copy may exist at %APPDATA%\Wartales\save. Game Pass uses Local/Packages/7286ShiroGamesSAS.../SystemAppData instead.

Launch once to recreate folders, then check Roaming Wartales/save and the old install path. Copy any found files into the live save folder with the game closed.
