Where Does WaveLab Store Settings and Montages?
WaveLab settings location, montages and companion files on Windows and Mac, and the broken reference trap.
Last updated
WaveLab lets the settings folder itself move through Preferences, General tab, which is unusual and handy for multi machine rigs. Montages reference audio rather than embedding it. Companion files with peaks and metadata sit beside the audio unless redirected.
Reference breakage is the classic pain. Move a source file and every montage pointing at it complains on open. Stable audio folders plus rendered deliverables avoid the whole class of problem.
Where WaveLab stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Steinberg\WaveLab Pro
Steinberg roaming root with versioned subfolders; the exact settings path shows in Preferences, General tab and can be relocated there. Montages (.mon) and audio live wherever you save them, referenced not embedded.
~/Library/Preferences/WaveLab Pro
Same relocatable logic as Windows via Preferences. Keep audio folders stable; broken references prompt for relink but bulk moves still waste sessions.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move WaveLab settings?
Change it under File, Preferences, General tab, which exposes the settings files location directly. Restart after moving so the new path takes effect cleanly.
Why does my montage say files are missing?
Montages store references, not audio. Moving source files breaks them, and WaveLab offers relink on open. Keep audio stable or render finished work to standalone files.
Where are WaveLab companion files?
Beside the audio by default, changeable under Preferences, Folders. Companion files hold peaks and metadata; deleting them only costs rebuild time, never audio.
