Where Is the wayvnc Config File?

wayvnc reads an extensionless config file at ~/.config/wayvnc/config (overridable with -C), plus a runtime control socket.

Last updated

wayvnc keeps one extensionless file: config under ~/.config/wayvnc (honoring XDG_CONFIG_HOME). Address, port, auth, TLS paths and keyboard maps live there as plain key=value lines.

Runtime control bypasses the file entirely through the wayvncctl socket in XDG_RUNTIME_DIR. Output switching, client lists and shutdowns all happen over JSON IPC while the file stays the boot-time source.

Where wayvnc stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/wayvnc/config

Auth, TLS paths, keyboard, outputs. -C selects alternates; wayvncctl socket defaults to $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/wayvncctl for live control.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a config outside ~/.config/wayvnc/?

Pass -C <path>. Flags still beat the file for one-offs, and the control socket (wayvncctl) adjusts outputs live without restarts.

My TLS keys break when I move the config. Why?

Set use_relative_paths=true. Certificate and key paths then resolve against the config dir, which keeps moved setups working.
