Where Does WeeChat Store Chat Logs?

WeeChat files IRC logs per server and channel in a logs folder beside its config, one file per day.

Last updated

WeeChat keeps its whole life in ~/.weechat. Config files, scripts, and the logs directory share that home, which makes the client trivially portable as a single folder.

The logger plugin writes one file per channel per day under a server directory, so history browses like a calendar. Filenames carry the date, channels sort by network first. Copying .weechat to a new machine moves config, scripts, and years of logs in one command.

Where WeeChat stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.weechat/logs

Logs sort by server then channel with daily files. weechat.conf, irc.conf, and logger settings sit in the same home directory.

macOS
~/.weechat/logs

Same layout as Linux. Homebrew and MacPorts installs share this location with no macOS specific moves.

Frequently asked questions

Logging stopped but I changed nothing. Why?

Check the logger plugin with /plugin. WeeChat logs through that plugin, and an unloaded logger means silence with no error. Reload it and logging resumes from that moment, not retroactively.

Can I read the logs outside WeeChat?

Yes for reading: the files are plain text with timestamps. Open them anywhere. Long channels accumulate thousands of small files, so archive by year when the folder gets unwieldy.
