Where Does WeeChat Store Config and Logs?

Where WeeChat keeps weechat.conf, logs, and plugin data, and how the XDG move changed paths.

Last updated

WeeChat keeps config and state together: weechat.conf plus plugin configs at the top, with logs/, xfer/, and plugin data underneath. Modern builds use ~/.config/weechat (or $XDG_CONFIG_HOME); older ones used ~/.weechat.

Check both roots when files seem missing after distro-hopping. The legacy path still appears in old guides and some packages. /save in-app writes current options to disk; unsaved tweaks vanish on quit.

Where WeeChat stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/weechat/

weechat.conf, sec.conf, plugin configs plus logs/ and xfer/. Legacy ~/.weechat/ pre-XDG still seen on old installs. Run /save before copying.

Frequently asked questions

How do I migrate WeeChat to a new machine?

Copy the whole data dir (config files plus logs/, xfer/, plugins) to the new machine with WeeChat closed. Keep versions close; plugin APIs shift between major releases. Relay and matrix credentials travel in sec.conf, so guard that file.

Where are chat logs and downloads?

Logs default to logs/ as IRC log files per channel, and /set logger.file.path can relocate them. DCC transfers land in xfer/. Back up both trees with the configs for a full move.
