Where Is the weston.ini Config File?
Weston reads weston.ini from XDG config home (~/.config/weston.ini) down through /etc/xdg, sectioned by backend and shell.
Last updated
Weston searches weston.ini down the XDG ladder: user config home first, then each XDG_CONFIG_DIRS weston subfolder, finally /etc/xdg. Sections cover core backend, outputs, inputs, shell, terminal and autolaunch.
Kiosk and automotive builds lean on the system end of that chain while desktops use the user file. Either way the man page (weston.ini(5)) documents every key, so unknown options mean typos, not mysteries.
Where Weston stores this, by platform
~/.config/weston.ini
Backend, outputs, inputs, shell, autolaunch. CLI flags override file values; spaces in the INI are significant, quotes are not supported.
Frequently asked questions
How do I configure Weston for one user?
Create ~/.config/weston.ini with [core], [output] and [keyboard] sections (see the man page for the full key list). User file beats every system path, so per-user experiments never touch the fleet config.
Can I override settings without editing the file?
Pass them as flags (e.g. idle-time). CLI values beat the ini, which suits kiosk scripts that share one base file across machines with different timeouts.
