Where Does Windows Credential Manager Store Credentials?
Credential Manager vaults live under AppData in Credentials and Vault folders, encrypted to your account.
Last updated
Credential Manager stores secrets in vault files under your AppData folders. Generic credentials land in Microsoft Credentials, while web and Windows credentials use the Vault tree beside it. Everything encrypts with DPAPI against your login, which binds the files to your account on that machine.
The folders look unimpressive from Explorer because the contents are opaque by design. Add, edit, and remove entries through the Credential Manager control panel. Backup runs through its own export wizard rather than file copy, since copies alone restore nowhere else.
Where Windows stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Credentials
Generic credential blobs live here. The Vault sibling under LocalAppData Microsoft Vault holds web credentials. Both decrypt only under your login on this machine.
Frequently asked questions
Can I read Credential Manager files directly?
No. Files there are DPAPI encrypted blobs tied to your login, so browsing shows opaque entries. Manage them through Control Panel under Credential Manager instead. Copying them to another account buys nothing.
How do I back up my Windows credentials?
Open Credential Manager and use Back Up Credentials to export a .crd file to safe storage. Restore on the same account with Restore Credentials. Moving to another user or PC requires re entering secrets by hand.
