Where Does Steps Recorder Save Recordings on Windows?

Where Steps Recorder saves its ZIP captures on Windows by default, and why you must save each recording manually.

Last updated

Steps Recorder, also called Problem Steps Recorder or PSR, has no project folder. Each recording is a single ZIP you name at save time, holding an MHT report plus screenshots. Nothing persists until you press Stop and save.

The tool suggests Documents as the save spot, but the last folder you used sticks. Microsoft deprecated PSR in Windows 11 in favor of Snipping Tool and Game Bar, so save captures somewhere safe while it still ships.

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\Documents

User chosen ZIP per recording, commonly under Documents. Contains an MHT report plus per click PNGs. No autosave; an unsaved session on close is lost.

Frequently asked questions

Does Steps Recorder auto-save my recording?

No. PSR only writes when you press Stop Record and choose a file name. Closing without saving discards the capture. Save to Documents or Desktop at the end of every session.

How do I open a Steps Recorder ZIP on Windows 11?

Open the ZIP, then the MHT inside, in Edge or Word. Modern Chrome builds can refuse MHT rendering. The ZIP also contains one PNG per click, which you can browse directly.
