Where Does Windows Store Widgets Board Data?

Where the Windows Widgets board keeps its feed cache and settings inside the Web Experience package.

Last updated

Widgets run inside the Windows Web Experience pack, not Explorer itself. Settings and feed cache live under the package folder for MicrosoftWindows.Client.WebExperience in LocalAppData. The taskbar toggle controls visibility, while the account feed controls content.

That packaging matters for troubleshooting. Reinstalling Windows Shell does not touch the board. Resetting the Web Experience package does. If Widgets open blank after an update, repair or reset that package in Apps settings. Your documents are elsewhere, so the risk is low, but you will sign back into the feed.

Board cache and settings live under this package in LocalAppData. Use Apps then Installed apps to repair or reset it. Exact version suffix changes with updates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn Widgets off completely?

Open Widgets settings and sign out of the board feed, or use Group Policy to turn the board off. Deleting the package folder alone triggers a repair reinstall. The supported off switch is the taskbar Widgets toggle plus the feed setting, not file deletion.

Does clearing Widgets data delete my files?

Rarely. The board is a web view over MSN content, so most storage is cache. Your files stay in Documents and OneDrive. If the board shows stale news, clear the package cache and sign back in. Disk use returns quickly because the feed repopulates.
