Where Does Wings 3D Store Models and Preferences?

Wings 3D keeps preferences in the standard app data dir while models live in .wings files you save.

Last updated

Wings 3D stores preferences, hotkeys, and UI layout in the standard application data directory per platform. Models themselves live in .wings files you save wherever you choose.

That split decides the backup story. Settings migrate by copying the preferences folder; artwork migrates by saving files. Reinstalling loses hotkeys but never saved models. Export OBJ and other formats for engines, but archive the .wings original.

Where Wings 3D stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\Wings3D\preferences.txt

Preferences, hotkeys, and UI layout. Models save wherever you choose; only settings live here. Copy for migration.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Wings3D/preferences.txt

Same split under the user Library. Artwork files live wherever saved; this folder holds preferences only. If this folder is absent, Wings 3D may be running portably with preferences beside the executable instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I keep a finished model?

Save the model as a .wings file through File Save. Open viewports are memory only until saved, so unsaved geometry dies with the app.
