Where Are The Witcher 3 Save Files Located?

The Witcher 3 save folder on Windows and Linux, the Steam userdata fallback, and the Remastered update's cross-progression.

Last updated

The Witcher 3 keeps saves in Documents/The Witcher 3/gamesaves on a normal Windows install. Steam, GOG, the Complete Edition and the next-gen Remastered update all use that same folder. Files end in .sav and stack up fast across playthroughs.

Saves sometimes appear to vanish after a Steam update or account switch. They are usually in a userdata fallback under steamapps for AppID 292030. OneDrive syncing Documents can also hide them behind a broken placeholder file. Check both spots before assuming progress is gone.

Where The Witcher 3 stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\The Witcher 3\gamesaves

If the folder is empty, check Steam\userdata\[SteamID]\292030\ac\WinMyDocuments\The Witcher 3\gamesaves. Copy any files found there back into Documents.

Linux
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/292030/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/The Witcher 3/gamesaves

Proton path for the Steam release. The exact Steam root varies (~/.steam/steam versus ~/Steam). Search for gamesaves if your library lives elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Does The Witcher 3 Remastered use the same save folder?

Yes. The next-gen update reads Documents\The Witcher 3\gamesaves like the older versions did, so saves carry over after upgrading with nothing to move. GOG cross-progression can also pull saves from a linked console copy.

Do Steam Cloud saves overwrite local Witcher 3 saves?

They can after reinstalls. Back up the gamesaves folder first, then launch once and let Cloud sync. If slots look wrong, restore your backup with Steam closed and keep Cloud enabled afterward.

Why is my Witcher 3 folder in Documents a blank file?

OneDrive sometimes replaces it with a placeholder when sync breaks. Delete that placeholder file in the OneDrive folder, then relaunch through Steam so Cloud saves can repopulate the real folder.
