Where Does Xemu Store Saves and Config?

Xemu keeps game saves inside the virtual HDD image, not as files. Where the image, EEPROM, and config live.

Last updated

Xemu stores game saves on the E partition of its virtual hard drive image, exactly like real hardware. There is no per game save file to copy. To reach saves as files you access the image contents over FTP while Xemu runs.

The machine side files are ordinary though. Config, the eeprom.bin, and the qcow2 hard drive image default to %APPDATA%\xemu\xemu on Windows, ~/.local/share/xemu on Linux, and ~/Library/Application Support/xemu on macOS. Back those up and the saves ride along inside the image.

Where Xemu stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\xemu\xemu

Holds xemu.toml config, eeprom.bin, and the HDD image with saves on its E partition. Reach individual saves via FTP into the running instance; snapshot data also lives in the image.

Linux
~/.local/share/xemu

Same layout as Windows under XDG data home. Copy the whole folder with Xemu closed to migrate machines. Keep the HDD key from eeprom.bin if you resign saves with outside tools.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/xemu

Same file set in Application Support. Finder hides ~/Library, so use Go to Folder. The virtual disk image is the large file; that size is normal.

Frequently asked questions

where is my xemu game save file

Inside the virtual hard drive image, on its E partition. Xemu documents this directly: saves work like a real Xbox. Use FTP access to pull files out, or back up the whole HDD image file to keep everything.

how do i back up xemu fully

Quit Xemu and copy the entire data folder for your OS above. It contains the config, EEPROM, and disk image together. The EEPROM decides region and HDD key, so keep it with the image.
