Where Does Zoom Store Virtual Backgrounds?
Zoom virtual backgrounds on Windows, Mac and Linux, the Custom and Default data folder split for transfer.
Last updated
Zoom keeps virtual backgrounds inside its per user data tree. Customs live in VirtualBkgnd_Custom, stock images in VirtualBkgnd_Default, videos in VirtualBkgnd_Video. The parent is Roaming/Zoom/data on Windows.
Mac mirrors it under Library Application Support/zoom.us/data. Linux Flathub builds use ~/.zoom/data with the same folder names. Copying Customs across machines works when Zoom stays closed during the move. Recreate names exactly by hand. Meeting clips live elsewhere as a separate backup job.
Where Zoom stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Zoom\data\VirtualBkgnd_Custom
Custom images in VirtualBkgnd_Custom, stock in Default, clips in Video. Copy Customs with Zoom closed. Admins can restrict uploads.
~/Library/Application Support/zoom.us/data/VirtualBkgnd_Custom
Same folder names under Library Application Support zoom.us data. Copy with the app closed like on Windows.
~/.zoom/data/VirtualBkgnd_Custom
Same tree under ~/.zoom/data on Linux builds. Customs port across OSes since only image files move.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move custom backgrounds to a new PC?
Copy the VirtualBkgnd_Custom folder into the same data path on the new machine with Zoom closed. Defaults rebuild alone. Keep videos small or sync drags on.
Why can I not upload a background?
Admins can block uploads or force defaults from the web portal. Custom files stay local per device regardless. Check account settings when the add button is missing.
