Where Does Aegisub Store Config and Autosaves?

Aegisub keeps config.json, autosaves and autobackups in a per-OS user folder. Paths, crash recovery and portable mode.

Last updated

Aegisub funnels everything through one user folder (?user in its docs). Configuration lives in config.json there, minute-by-minute working copies in autosave, and an on-open snapshot of every script in autoback. Subtitle files themselves stay wherever you saved them.

After a crash, check the recovered folder first, then File > Open Autosaved File for the minute-interval copies. Resetting to defaults is one delete of config.json away. Portable mode redirects ?user to a ?data folder beside the program when a local config exists.

Where Aegisub stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\Aegisub

config.json, autosave, autoback and recovered beneath it. An install-folder config.json flips the whole tree into portable mode beside the exe.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Aegisub

Same config plus autosave/autoback layout. Autosaves clean themselves up, so don't treat them as an archive. Use Go > Go to Folder to get in.

Linux
~/.aegisub

Home dotfolder equivalent of the other platforms. Crash leftovers land in recovered with timestamps. Delete config.json while closed for a clean reset.

Frequently asked questions

Aegisub crashed, where is my subtitle work?

Check the recovered folder in the user path above for crash dumps, then File > Open Autosaved File for the rolling minute copies. Save whatever you find under a real filename immediately.

How do I back up Aegisub settings?

Copy config.json (plus hotkeys and dictionaries if customized) from the user folder while Aegisub is closed. Subtitle scripts need a separate backup since they live in your own project folders.
