Where Does Blue Iris Save Clips?

Blue Iris default clip folders for new, stored, and alerts on Windows, plus where to change them safely.

Last updated

Blue Iris records to a small set of folders on Windows. Fresh clips land in C:\BlueIris\New by default for every camera. The archiving task later moves them to Stored for retention and copies events to Alerts. Those three paths carry nearly all disk usage.

Program settings live separately in the registry and ProgramData. Clips are plain MP4 or BVR files you can copy freely. Change paths under Settings, Clips and Archiving. Keep New on fast local disk and push Stored to bigger volumes or a NAS share.

Where Blue Iris stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\BlueIris\New

Default recording buffer. Keep on local NTFS for reliable writes. Move older files to Stored with the archiving schedule to cap growth.

Windows
C:\BlueIris\Stored

Long term retention and flagged events. Alerts holds copies, so it can be smaller. Point Stored at a NAS share only after New proves stable.

Frequently asked questions

how do i change where Blue Iris saves clips

Open Settings, Clips and Archiving to see the New, Stored, and Alerts paths. New is the recording buffer on fast disk. Stored is long term retention. Alerts holds flagged event copies.

can Blue Iris record to a NAS

Yes, but keep the New folder on a local NTFS drive for recording and use the network path only for Stored. Recording directly to SMB drops frames under load. The archiving task moves files on schedule.
