Where Are Cassette Beasts Save Files Located?

Cassette Beasts stores Steam saves as .gcpf files in AppData Roaming, with Game Pass copies in the package wgs tree.

Last updated

Cassette Beasts is a Godot game with an unusual save format: compressed JSON files ending in .json.gz.gcpf, one per slot. Steam and Epic builds keep them in AppData Roaming under CassetteBeasts, with a mods folder alongside for .pck mods.

Game Pass builds use the packaged wgs tree with coded names instead, which is why cross store moves need conversion rather than copying. Linux builds, including Deck, use .local/share/CassetteBeasts with the same file layout as Steam on Windows.

Where Cassette Beasts stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\CassetteBeasts

fileN.json.gz.gcpf files are slots. The mods subfolder holds .pck files. .tmp files here are crash leftovers usable for recovery.

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\RawFury.CassetteBeasts_9s0pnehqffj7t\SystemAppData\wgs

Coded folder and file names inside wgs. One profile per subfolder when several Xbox profiles played. Needs conversion for Steam use.

Linux
~/.local/share/CassetteBeasts

Same .gcpf slot files and mods layout as Windows Steam. Heroic launcher runs may need a manually created CassetteBeasts folder to save.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up saves before trying mods?

Back up the whole CassetteBeasts folder first. Mods live in the mods subfolder, and a bad .pck only needs deleting to uninstall, but saves sit beside it.

My save corrupted. Is there a recovery trick?

Look for .tmp files in the save folder. Rename the damaged .gcpf aside and trim .tmp off the matching temp file. Disable autosave if your device loses power often.

Can I move a Game Pass save to Steam directly?

Copy the wgs save out, but the formats differ, so transfers need the community repack script. Pure copy paste between these two folders does not load.
