Where Does Chatterino Store Settings and Logs?

Chatterino stores settings, window layout, and optional chat logs in a per-OS data folder. Exact paths for each system are inside.

Last updated

Chatterino keeps everything in one data folder per OS: settings.json for options and login state, window-layout.json for tabs and splits, plus Cache, Logs, Misc, and Settings subfolders beside them. Copy that folder and you have moved your whole setup, highlights and channel list included.

Chat logging stays off until you enable it, so an empty Logs folder is normal and not a bug. Portable mode places the same structure next to the executable, which suits a USB install that should leave no trace on the host machine.

Where Chatterino stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\Chatterino2

Holds settings.json, window-layout.json, and the Logs, Cache, Misc, and Settings subfolders. Back it up with the app closed.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/chatterino

Same interior layout as Windows, but note the lowercase folder name. Paste the path into Finder with Go to Folder.

Linux
~/.local/share/chatterino

Follows XDG_DATA_HOME when that variable is set. Flatpak installs use ~/.var/app/com.chatterino.chatterino/data/chatterino instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up my Chatterino settings?

Quit Chatterino, then copy the whole data folder somewhere safe. It contains your login token in settings.json, so treat the backup like a password and keep it private.

Where are Chatterino chat logs stored?

Chat logs live in the Logs subfolder of the same data folder, but only when logging is turned on in Settings. You can also set a custom log folder there instead of the default.
