Where Does Astrill VPN Store Settings and Servers?
Astrill VPN install folders on Windows, Mac and Linux, plus where manual OpenVPN certs go.
Last updated
Astrill keeps its client state inside the installed application rather than a documented per user data folder. Server lists, protocol choice and filters live behind the app window. Reset them with Help inside the app when a location refuses to connect.
Credentials are the separate piece. The desktop client remembers your login in the OS vault, so a reinstall keeps asking for the password you typed rather than a file you copied. Manual OpenVPN setups are the exception: those certificates are files you generate in the members area and drop into the OpenVPN config folder yourself.
Where Astrill VPN stores this, by platform
C:\Program Files\Astrill
Install root for the desktop client. Manual OpenVPN certs you generate on the Astrill site go to C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config instead. Use Help > Reset Settings in the app before deleting anything by hand.
/Applications/Astrill.app
Standard drag install from the .dmg. Login state sits in Keychain, VPN sharing and DNS handling need the system extension approved. Reset from inside the app when servers disappear after an update.
/opt/astrill
DEB/RPM/SH installs land here with the astrill GUI plus the asproxy helper. First run needs the helper initialized as root. Application filtering and OpenWeb smart mode state stay with this install.
Frequently asked questions
where do I put Astrill OpenVPN certificates on Windows
Generate the zip in the members area, then extract ca.crt, client.crt, client.key and the .ovpn files into C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config. Run the OpenVPN GUI as administrator, import the files, then pick a server from the tray icon.
why does Astrill forget my password
It stores the flag in its own settings, but the secret lives in the OS credential store. Retype the password by hand instead of pasting it, log out and back in once, then exit cleanly. Pasting is the failure mode their troubleshooting page calls out.
