Where Does Clip Studio Paint Store User Data?

Clip Studio Paint keeps brushes and settings in the CELSYS folder, while .clip artwork files live wherever you save them.

Last updated

Clip Studio Paint splits things. Your actual pages (.clip files) go wherever you put them with File > Save. Brushes, materials, shortcuts, and preferences go to the CELSYS user data folder. Lose that folder and the app still opens, but your custom setup is gone.

The folder moved in version 1.10.13 on Windows. Older installs used Documents. Newer ones use AppData Roaming. If you only find one of them, that tells you which version path your install follows.

Where Clip Studio Paint stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\CELSYSUserData

Current location since 1.10.13. Older installs used Documents\CELSYS. Artwork files (.clip) are separate and live wherever you saved them. Back up both.

macOS
~/Documents/CELSYS

Brushes, materials, and preferences. Exact path may vary by version, check CLIP STUDIO > Storage Location (gear icon) if this does not match. Keep .clip artwork files in a separate backed up folder.

Frequently asked questions

Where are Clip Studio Paint autosaves and backups?

Look inside the CELSYS data tree under CLIPStudioPaintData, in DocumentBackup and InitialBackup folders. Large .clip files can fill these fast, so clear old entries if your system drive runs low.

How do I move Clip Studio Paint data to another drive?

Close Paint, open CLIP STUDIO, click the gear icon, then Storage Location, and pick a new path for shared libraries. Move the whole CELSYS folder by hand if you want every setting carried over.
